About this work
In 1938 Laurence Le Guay set up a photographic studio in Martin Place, Sydney, where he became known for his fashion and advertising illustrations. In addition to his commercial work, Le Guay was influenced by international trends in surrealism and experimented with the techniques of photomontage, which involved layering different images to form new and often bizarre compositions. In these montages Le Guay has combined separate negatives to create dramatic and symbolic photographs that address the fears and anxieties of a nation that was on the brink of entering into the Second World War.
