About this work
The hollow supports of this bowl are modelled as human legs with feet and painted with black geometric motifs. The bowl’s inner and outer surfaces are decorated, in red and black with the habitual Mixtec motif of stepped Greek key and spirals (or xicalcoliukqui) probably based on a stylised bird or serpent head. The glossy surface of the dense polychrome is produced by painstaking burnishing with an agate or bone tool.
