About this work
Born in Naarm/Melbourne and of Trawlwoolway descent, Julie Gough uses methods inspired by archaeology to reconstruct scattered fragments of personal and national memory. Her research and art practice involves uncovering and re-presenting subsumed and often conflicting histories, many of which refer to her family’s experiences as Tasmanian Aboriginal people. In ‘Night sky journey’ and ‘tracking self’, Gough utilises natural materials she has sourced on Country including basalt stone and bull kelp, deeply connecting the viewer to the Tasmanian landscape. Through her work, Gough reclaims Indigenous history and revives stories often erased by colonial archives, while drawing focus to the ongoing impacts of colonisation on people and place, in particular, the destruction and commodification of Country.
