About this work
Emma Minnie Boyd (nee a’Beckett) studied at the National Gallery School in Melbourne and is thought to have taken private lessons with Louis Buvelot and Madame Vieusseux. In 1886 she married Arthur Merric Boyd in a union that marked the beginning of an Australian artistic dynasty. The window seat is one of a group of four paintings from the late 1880s that depict interiors of family drawing rooms and friends and family members engaging in leisurely pursuits. The painting shows the interior of ‘Glenfern’, the Boyd family’s Gothic residence on Inkerman Street, Balaclava. It is likely that the figure is Arthur Merric Boyd’s sister, Lucy.
