About this work
Leaving her suburban childhood home in Box Hill, Jenny Watson found herself immersed in Melbourne’s energetic inner-city art and punk scene. The Crimean Wars series is her farewell to her life on Crimea Street in St Kilda in the mid 1980s, here expressed through an aggressive and scratched style of painting that emphasises gesture and the hand of the artist. Watson portrays herself as Cinderella, creeping home after midnight with high heels in hand – a moment in punk subculture captured through an image of youth and personal experience.
