About this work
Since 1999 Yamamoto has studied formal, structured clothing and haute couture, including the work of American designer Charles James (1906–78). This jacket references nineteenth-century Euro-American styles and traditional Japanese culture. Its patchworking invokes mending and re-dyeing, patching and stitching techniques employed by Japanese farmers to restore their clothing, while also revisiting European quilt-making traditions. The ensemble’s hourglass silhouette is a direct homage to Christian Dior’s iconic 1947 ‘New Look’.
