About this work

Charles and Ray Eames based their Lounge chair 670 and Ottoman 671 on the traditional English buttoned leather club chair. With the streamlined elegance of moulded plywood with rosewood veneer and soft padded leather, the lounge chair exudes an air of executive power and status.

The three-dimensional sculptural quality of the pieces also illustrates the Eames’s interest in designing furniture in the round, similar to free-standing sculpture. With the rise of open-plan living spaces in the 1950s, designers were bringing furniture away from walls and into the room where it was required to stand on its own.
