About this work
Accomplished in the style of seventeenth-century French artist Claude Lorrain, as well as the most famous British artist of his time, J. W. Turner, Conrad Martens adopted European techniques in his depictions of the vastly different Australian landscape. In this painting, Martens used the Claudian formula of a dark foreground, a light middle ground and framing by trees. The landscape is idyllic and peaceful, which is further enhanced by Marten’s light brushwork and palette, which give the illusion of a watercolour.
