About this work
Arthur Loureiro was a catalyst in the Melbourne art world of the late nineteenth century, and produced some of the earliest Symbolist works in Australia. When he arrived in Melbourne, he brought with him an enthusiasm for plein air (in the open air) painting and a knowledge of the latest developments in the Parisian art world. The freshness of his approach to landscape can be seen in this work: an evocation of a land awakening from slumber.
