About this work
Celebrated for her floral still-life works, Margaret Preston was a leading advocate of modernism in Sydney during the interwar period. Preston travelled widely throughout Britain and Europe between 1904 and 1919, and it was during this time she developed her distinctive decorative style. In 1938 Preston completed as series of ten large-scale paintings depicting Australian flora. Six were displayed in the Australian Pavilion at the New York World’s Fair in April 1939, and another four, including Flannel flowers, were exhibited at the Golden Gate International Exposition in San Francisco later that year.
