About this work
French-born Paulette Goldberg immigrated to Brisbane in 1950, where she pursued a dressmaking apprenticeship before relocating to Melbourne in 1954 to work at the Le Louvre salon. In 1960, she opened her own dressmaking business, Miss Paulette, creating glamourous formal garments, notable for their use of time-consuming artisanal techniques, including hand-beading and finishing. Responding to the decade’s shift towards youthful, ready-to-wear styles, Goldberg incorporated graphic elements, cut-outs and high-key colour to maintain a modern edge.
