About this work
Paris Bordone was born in Treviso, near Venice. When his father died in 1508 the young Bordone moved to Venice with his mother. Thought to have entered the studio of Titian in 1516, Bordone was apparently expelled after only two years because his style was too close to that of his master’s, especially his elegant handling of paint. In this painting the infant Christ has called upon a tree to bend down so Joseph can pluck its fruit, and called for a spring to appear to slake his parents’ thirst. This miracle is described in the gospel of Pseudo-Matthew, as well as in Jacobus de Voragine’s Golden Legend (c.1250).
