About this work
In 1966, after graduating with a degree in law, Yohji Yamamoto insisted on helping his mother with her dressmaking business. Although reluctant at first, she taught him to sew, and he enrolled at Bunka Fashion College in Tokyo. In 1977 Yamamoto presented his first collection, Y, in Tokyo, before debuting in Paris in 1981. Throughout his career, Yamamoto has challenged the status quo with progressive anti-establishment design choices that question Westernised ideals of gender and beauty. This early work demonstrates his avant-garde approach to tailoring, comprising a monochromatic loose-fitting silhouette that appears deceptively simplistic and unfinished.
