About this work
Craig Charles’s Nan and pop’s campfire kitchen is enriched with the artist’s memories of growing up with his grandparents on Wamba Wamba Country around Swan Hill, Victoria. Working in his preferred medium of acrylic embellished with gold leaf and shellac, the artist asserts his connection to Country along the banks of the Murray River, represented in the work by a dotted wavy line that frames a dark blue section at the base of the canvas. Charles explained that this work reflects on his memories and experiences of bush living on the outskirts of town, in contrast to the routine ‘pumpkin stew’ of life in the centre of town.
