About this work
In 1916, following two years in Antarctica with Sir Ernest Shackleton, Frank Hurley was appointed as Official War Photographer to the Australian Imperial Force (AIF) and sent to the battlefields of France. In comparison to the pristine wilderness of Antarctica, the horror of the war in Europe was devastating. Reflecting on this experience, Hurley wrote in his 1916 diary: ‘We were transported from the white fields of peace to the grim red mud of Flanders.’
