About this work
Based on imagery from an artwork of the same name by Niuean/Aotearoa New Zealander artist John Pule, Doris De Pont’s winter 2004 collection Let’s Gather Here reflects her interest in New Zealand’s Pacific influences. The halter-neck top and sunray pleated skirt have been hand-printed with designs drawn by Pule. The outfit is styled with a titi (dance skirt) made from black video tape, a perspex headpiece made by milliner Margo Barton, and a mother-of-pearl necklace made by artist Sofia Tekela-Smith. The necklace, titled Towards a ship of arrivals..., is also engraved with a piece of poetry by Pule.
