About this work

Both these landscapes take elements and motifs from several known autograph paintings by Jan Brueghel the Elder (1568– 1625). Until recent expert analysis, both works were confidently attributed to the master since they are very finely painted by a skilled hand. Both works are painted on a copper panel that was previously used to produce a well-known print depicting the biblical character Enoch and his family. Executed by Johannes (Joan) Galle, an Antwerp print publisher and dealer, around 1636–40, this was itself a copy of an earlier print created by Johannes Sadeler I (1550–1600). Although the plate has been cut in half to make the support for the two paintings, the engraved composition is still in excellent condition.
