About this work
Sarah Lucas exhibited in the notorious 1988 Freeze exhibition in London and emerged in the 1990s as one of the major Young British Artists (YBAs). Working in sculpture, installation and photography, her works challenge sexual stereotyping and make use of the ready-made, ribald humour and a deadpan, style-less presentation. Lucas’s photographic self-portraits continue her agenda of critique and her interest in the construction and manipulation of the persona of the artist. In 1999 she reissued as digital prints twelve self-portrait photographs that play with the codes of gender representation and processes of celebrity-construction.
