About this work
Kitty Kantilla was born at Piripumawu around 1928 and grew up in the bush at Yimpinari, on the eastern side of Melville Island. Most of her early paintings, created in 1992–97, consist of multiple dots, lines and blocks of colour on black, following the Tiwi custom of painting directly on the skin or on the charred surface of individually carved tutini (grave poles) used for the Pukumani (mortuary) ceremony. In 1996, however, Kantilla was introduced to printmaking through the Australian Print Workshop, where she was able to transfer her art onto a white background – a radical shift for Tiwi artists.
