This painting had no frame when it was acquired and so was a high priority for framing so that it could be displayed in the gallery. Frames on Johnstone’s works at the Art Gallery of South Australia were referred to and a suitable frame was found on Johnstone’s Beeches, Fontainebleau, painted in 1882. This English neo-classical style frame provides a relatively wide gold border, consisting of several bands of running ornament, which is typical of conventional salon frames of the period.
The frame was constructed using traditional techniques, with a timber carcase, composition ornament and oil and water gilding using 23.5 karat gold leaf.
