Discover the powerful photographic works of Melbourne-based South Sudanese artist Atong Atem. Through richly layered portrait photography, Atem uses textiles, paint and symbolic objects to examine identity, memory, gender and representation. Drawing on African studio photography traditions and diasporic narratives, Atem transforms the camera into a tool for storytelling, cultural celebration and self-representation. Her vibrant works connect personal and collective histories with stories of resilience, migration and cultural continuity.

Through discussion, close looking and activities in the gallery spaces, students will consider how Atem challenges stereotypes, communicates lived experience and creates spaces for visibility and empowerment.
