Levels 7–VCE

Mon–Fri, 10am, 11.30am, 1pm & 2.30pm
NGV Australia

Explore the bold and vibrant world of Australian artist Margaret Preston and discover how she used subject matter, colour, pattern, and design in innovative ways to create a distinctive modern style that explores Australian identity. Led by an NGV educator, students will explore Preston’s striking visual style, the cultural influences behind her work, and how artists continue to respond to her legacy today. Through lively discussion and close looking, students will consider how art can communicate ideas, shape identity and inspire new ways of seeing.

Students will:

  • Discuss how Preston used the art elements and principles to communicate ideas and meaning
  • Identify Preston’s distinctive subject matter, sources of inspiration and examine the relationship between artistic intention and visual language.
  • Analyse how artworks reflect the social, cultural and historical contexts in which they are made and how interpretation can shift across time and audiences.
