Using the NGV to Teach for Pre-service Teachers

The National Gallery of Victoria offers endless opportunities to enrich teaching and learning across the curriculum, extending beyond Visual Arts and Design. This program is designed for pre-service teachers and provides practical insights into the learning programs and resources available to help you create engaging, cross-curricular experiences for your students.  

Discover strategies for engaging with works of art and design, gain tips for planning meaningful and successful gallery visits, and build confidence in incorporating gallery learning into your future teaching practice. 

This program can be tailored to meet specific curriculum focus of the group. 

Learning Objectives/ Participants will:

  • Explore the scope of the NGV Collection and its relevance to cross-curricular teaching
  • Identify NGV resources and programs that support pre-service teachers
  • Develop practical strategies for incorporating art and design into teaching practices, both in the classroom and during gallery visits
  • Connect themes and ideas in art and design to the Victorian Curriculum 2.0

AITSL Standards:

  • 2.1 Apply knowledge of the content and teaching strategies of the teaching area to develop engaging teaching activities.
  • 3.3 Select and use relevant teaching strategies to develop knowledge, skills, problem solving and critical and creative thinking.
  • 6.2 Participate in learning to update knowledge and practice, targeted to professional needs and school and/or system priorities.
  • 7.4 Participate in professional and community networks and forums to broaden knowledge and improve practice.

Duration: 90 minutes
Cost: $27 per person, minimum 10 people per group

We require four weeks notice for all bookings.

Changes to your booking must be made in writing. Changes can be made up to 14 days prior to your visit. Invoices will be sent prior to the visit. Full program fees will be incurred for late cancellations or amendments.

Please provide details of any relevant themes and skills your students are learning about at school. While we cannot offer individually tailored programs, our museum educators will consider this information when selecting and discussing works of art during the program.

Date Selection

We recommend you provide three date options for your program to avoid disappointment. We will do our best to accommodate your first preference, however due to high demand this may not always be possible.

Terms and Conditions

We do not take tentative bookings. Bookings are considered firm at time of booking. Any amendments, including changes to participant numbers, must be made by email at least 14 days prior to the program. Invoices will be sent prior to the visit. Full program fees will be incurred for late cancellations or amendments. Payment must be paid at least one week prior to the visit.
