VCE ART CREATIVE PRACTICE: Interpretive Lenses | Passage: The Art of Atong Atem

Using the Structural, Personal and Cultural Lenses, students will closely examine the vibrant photographic works of Melbourne-based South Sudanese artist Atong Atem. Students will consider how Atem uses portraiture, performance, styling and self-representation to communicate identity, memory and cultural experience.

Students will analyse how Atem challenges stereotypes, reclaims representation and reflects on diasporic identity through contemporary photographic practice. This program supports students to apply the Interpretive Lenses through the close study of a contemporary artist, her ideas and her practice.

Learning Objectives/ Students will:

  • Analyse how Atong Atem uses portraiture, styling and visual language to communicate identity, memory and cultural experience.
  • Apply the Structural, Personal and Cultural Lenses to interpret ideas and meanings in selected photographic works.
  • Discuss how Atong Atem uses art to challenge stereotypes and represent diverse perspectives and personal experiences.

Duration: 1 hour
Cost: $11 per secondary student

We require four weeks notice for all bookings.

Changes to your booking must be made in writing. Changes can be made up to 14 days prior to your visit. Invoices will be sent prior to the visit. Full program fees will be incurred for late cancellations or amendments.

Date Selection

We recommend you provide three date options for your program to avoid disappointment. We will do our best to accommodate your first preference, however due to high demand this may not always be possible.
