Introduction to Westwood | Kawakubo for Tertiary Students
Tertiary

Mon-Fri, 10am, 11.30am, 1pm & 2.30pm
NGV International

Explore the ideas and influences that shaped the work of iconic designers Vivienne Westwood and Rei Kawakubo, whose radical approaches redefined fashion by challenging the status quo.

In this NGV educator-led introduction, students will consider both the parallels and contrasts between each designer’s practices and learn about how they introduced radical approaches that challenged conventions of taste, gender and beauty, reshaping the way we think about fashion today.

Learning Objectives:

  • Analyse how Westwood and Kawakubo challenged conventions of taste, gender, and beauty, and consider their impact on the way we understand fashion.
  • Compare and contrast the creative processes, materials, and design philosophies of the two designers, identifying convergences and divergences in their practices.
  • Interpret how the exhibition design, including works from the NGV Collection, recontextualises their fashion within broader artistic and cultural frameworks.

Duration: 1 hour
Cost: $55 per student
