Introduction to Westwood| Kawakubo for Secondary Students
Levels 7-12

Mon–Fri, 10am, 11.30am, 1pm, 2.30pm
NGV International

Explore the bold ideas and creative visions of two of fashion’s most influential and rule-breaking designers of recent history.

In this NGV educator-led introduction, students will gain insight into the ways Westwood and Kawakubo’s practices have challenged conventions of taste, gender and beauty, reshaping how we understand and experience fashion.

The program also highlights how the exhibition design draws on artworks across the NGV Collection, offering new perspectives and framing the designers’ work within broader artistic and cultural contexts.

  • Analyse and interpret the themes, ideas and influences in the work of Vivienne Westwood and Rei Kawakubo, and how these are expressed through their designs.
  • Examine the creative processes, materials and techniques used by both designers, and how their innovative approaches challenge fashion conventions.
  • Explore how the exhibition design draws on artworks from the NGV Collection to offer new perspectives and situate their work within broader artistic and cultural contexts.
    • Duration: 45 mins plus self-guided time in the exhibition
      Cost: $25 per student
