Lunar New Year at NGV will be on Sunday 22nd of February 2026, from 10am to 5pm.
Lunar New Year at NGV will be held at NGV International at 180 St Kilda Road, Melbourne.
Visit the Directions & Parking page for information on public transport and parking options.
The Lunar New Year event is free, and no tickets are required.
If you would like to visit the Westwood | Kawakubo or Women Photographers 1900-1975 exhibitions, you will need to purchase a ticket. We recommend booking online ahead of time to avoid disappointment.
You can buy tickets:
The exhibitions and all public areas in the NGV, including hospitality outlets and NGV design store, are fully wheelchair and pram accessible.
In busy areas there are designated pram parking spaces. Please take any valuables with you.
Wheelchairs and motorised scooters are available for free hire from the information desk. We recommend booking a wheelchair or scooter prior to your visit by calling (03) 8620 2222 or making a booking online.
Any large bags that are not stored underneath wheelchairs or prams will need to be cloaked. There is a cloakroom near the entrance and the cloaking service is free. Items must be collected before 5pm.
Baby change facilities are available on ground level. At NGV International, a dedicated parents’ room provides a quiet space for families, plus a private feeding space and a microwave. Breastfeeding is welcome wherever you feel comfortable.
Accessible and gender-neutral bathrooms are available.
A Changing Places bathroom is located nearby at Arts Centre Melbourne’s Hamer Hall, approximately 300 metres from NGV International. Visit the Arts Centre Melbourne website for more information.
The Great Hall is a very large room with carpet and a stained-glass ceiling. Music will be playing throughout the day.
The Great Hall is often busy and noisy. If you are needing a lower-sensory area, we recommend the gallery spaces on the upper levels.
The Dragon Dance performances will be very loud at times and likely to attract large crowds.
Chinese Beijing Opera performances will take place in the Clemenger Auditorium. There is space for wheelchair users and their guests to sit at the front of the auditorium. The auditorium has a hearing loop. Please arrive ten minutes prior to the start time.
A workshop and tours will take place in the gallery spaces. The workshop offers a drawing activity which is suitable for all ages, and will held in gallery spaces on Level 2.
Tours will explore Collection highlights on Levels 1 & 2. Please meet at the Information Desk on the Ground Floor, five minutes prior to the start time.
Upper levels of the Gallery can be reached via escalators or lift. There are accessible bathrooms on all levels.
Seating options including benches, stools and chairs can be found throughout the gallery, including in exhibition spaces. Chairs with backs can be found in the Gallery Kitchen, Tea Room and in the Mahjong activity area.
Lightweight fold-out stools are available for free hire from the Information Desk and can be taken into exhibition spaces.
Family-friendly food options are available for purchase at Gallery Kitchen, the Tea Room or in Great Hall. You are welcome to bring food from home and eat in the Great Hall.
Please note that food and drinks can’t be taken into the exhibition spaces or onto the Dancing Pumpkin area.
A free water station is available in Gallery Kitchen, under the escalators.
Accredited assistance dogs are welcome at the NGV. Please ensure your assistance dog is wearing their jacket while at the Gallery.
Performances including the dragon dances and Chinese Beijing Opera will be loud. Lunar New Year is a popular event and large crowds are expected. If you need somewhere to take a break, the galleries on upper levels may be quieter.
You are welcome to bring headphones or fidget devices that you use.
Access aids, including earplugs, magnifying sheets and self-regulation fidget devices, are available for free hire from the information desk. We recommend booking prior to your visit, by calling (03) 8620 2222 or making a booking online.
