Huge summer line-up at NGV Australia with five solo exhibitions by contemporary Australian artists

The NGV has announced five solo exhibitions by leading Australian contemporary artists Del Kathryn Barton, Helen Maudsley, Mel O’Callaghan, Louise Paramor and Gareth Sansom for its 2017-18 summer program at The Ian Potter Centre: NGV Australia.

Tony Ellwood, Director, NGV, said, ‘Summer at NGV Australia will offer an exceptional line-up of free Australian contemporary art exhibitions, from the spectacular and otherworldly images of Del Kathryn Barton to the eclectic paintings of Gareth Sansom, alongside new and recent works by Helen Maudsley, Louise Paramor and Mel O’Callaghan.’

Launching in September, Gareth Sansom: Transformer is a major survey of the ground-breaking artist featuring more than 130 works, many never before exhibited. Born in Melbourne in 1939, Sansom has remained a pre-eminent figure of the Australian avant-garde art scene throughout his 60-year career and is renowned for his luridly coloured and densely layered canvases that engage with pop culture, art history, Australian vernacular, religion, mortality, sex and gender.

In November, one of Australia’s most popular artists and two-time Archibald Prize winner, Del Kathryn Barton, will feature in a major solo exhibition at NGV Australia. Del Kathryn Barton: The Highway is a Disco is a survey of new and recent work, examining Barton’s imaginative world of exuberant and ornately decorated portraits as well as collage, sculpture, textiles and film.

Our Knowing and Not Knowing: Helen Maudsley, opening in November, is an exhibition of recent work by esteemed senior Melbourne artist Helen Maudsley. Best known for her labyrinthine and graphic forms of abstract shapes, buildings and landscapes, Maudsley will present more than 20 new paintings and drawings that pull the viewer into the artist’s reflections of human relationships and the world around her.

Also debuting in November, a major commissioned installation of new paper sculptures by prominent sculptural artist Louise Paramor will take over a dedicated space at The Ian Potter Centre: NGV Australia, alongside a survey of her recent pop-inspired and colourful plastic assemblages, while Paris-based, Australian contemporary artist Mel O’Callaghan will hold the Australian premiere of her major video installation Ensemble. A recent NGV acquisition, O’Callaghan’s powerful, two-channel video work sees three men protest and triumph against violence and was recently shown at the Centre Pompidou, Paris.
