Spend the night with Napoleon

Celebrate the last weekend of Napoleon’s reign of Melbourne as the National Gallery of Victoria stays open all night on Saturday 6 October.

The NGV, with support from the City of Melbourne, are offering a night of free live entertainment and activities with special $10 tickets for Napoleon: Revolution to Empire from midnight Saturday 6 October until 8am Sunday 7 October.*

Tony Ellwood, Director, NGV said: “To celebrate the last weekend of this year’s Melbourne Winter Masterpieces exhibition, Napoleon: Revolution to Empire, we are holding a 24h hour event with free live music from contemporary bands and DJs, bold pop-up talks presented by the curatorial team , storytelling for families and delicious French inspired food and refreshments throughout the night.

“I encourage all Melburnians and visitors to the city to come and spend the night with Napoleon,” said Mr Ellwood.

Lord Mayor Robert Doyle said: “When we bring people into the city late at night to events and exhibitions such as Napoleon, we are activating the city in a way that changes the culture of the city late at night, making it not only livelier but safer as well.

“The City of Melbourne supported the NGV to keep its doors open until midnight for Bastille Day which was a great success. 

“This special 24 hour opening of Napoleon will be another highly entertaining event and one that we are proud to support,” said the Lord Mayor.

Visitors to the NGV during the evening will enjoy free live music from Henry Wagons, Jen Cloher, Hiatus Kaiyote, Axolotl, and PBS DJs Edd Fisher & Vince Peach. A wonderful range of talks and family friendly activities will be running throughout the evening, visit ngv.vic.gov.au for full details.

A delicious range of French inspired food, wines, cheeses, pastries and beverages will available throughout the night.

This panoramic exhibition features nearly 300 works, examining French art, culture and life from the 1770s to the 1820s and includes objects of breathtaking opulence and luxury – from paintings, drawings, engravings, sculpture, furniture, militaria, textiles, porcelain, gold and silver, fashion and jewellery.

Exclusive to Melbourne, Napoleon: Revolution to Empire will only be shown at the National Gallery of Victoria and must close at 5pm, Sunday 7 October.
