    From cattle dogs to lap dogs, divine felines to the black cats of superstition, Cats & Dogs explores humanity’s deep connection to these animals through more than 250 works of art and design.

    Drawn from the NGV Collection and spanning all periods and media, this exhibition of cats and dogs in art and design reveals how our domesticated companions have long been a rich source of visual imagery – from ancient history to the present day.

    Yayoi Kusama

    Curated by the NGV in collaboration with the artist especially for Australian audiences, the world-premiere exhibition, Yayoi Kusama, celebrates one of the world’s most important contemporary artists.

    Comprising nearly 200 artworks, the exhibition reveals the breadth of Kusama’s multidisciplinary practice through a diverse display of immersive installations, dancing pumpkins, and the global unveiling of the artist’s most recent kaleidoscopic infinity mirror room. It’s the largest presentation of Kusama’s work ever staged in Australia.

    NGV’s Tea Room, located on level 1 of NGV International, offers a modern interpretation of a timeless tradition. Featuring an array of handcrafted cakes and savoury treats, all meticulously crafted by our team of skilled pastry chefs. It’s perfect before or after exploring the free and everchanging NGV Collection.

    Experience the iconic architectural features of NGV International including the Waterwall entry and the Great Hall stained glass ceiling and discover one of Australia’s largest and most significant collections of international art and design.

    Students will be encouraged to ask questions and consider diverse ideas, perspectives and art forms through engaging activities and thought-provoking discussions inspired by art from different times and cultures. Ideal for a first-time visit to the NGV, this educator-led program is designed to spark curiosity and imagination, build confidence in interpreting and responding to works of art, and expand students’ observational and analytical skills.

    In this educator-led session, students will explore how Australian identity, history and culture are reflected through artworks from across the continent, and from different time periods. Through engaging activities and thought-provoking discussions, students will be encouraged to ask questions and consider diverse ideas, perspectives and art forms. Ideal for a first-time visit to the NGV, this program is designed to spark curiosity and imagination, build confidence in interpreting and responding to works of art and expand students’ observational and analytical skills.

    NGV Creative Studio inspired by Kaylene Whiskey

    Explore cultural icons, community and life on Country. With an NGV educator in the Gallery, students explore works in the First Nations and Australian art Collection, with a focus on the work of Kaylene Whiskey. Then in the studio, inspired by Whiskey’s vibrant and distinctive art practice, students will create a collage celebrating their heroes and important objects and symbols in their lives. This program offers a unique opportunity for personal expression, fostering a connection between the students’ own experiences and the rich artistic world of the artist. A certificate of completion can be provided on request.

    Explore visual storytelling in an educator-led program inspired by the modern relics created by contemporary artist/designer Jessica Murtagh. This educator-led program begins in the Gallery with students viewing and discussing a range of art and design works telling stories of everyday life. Then, in the studio, students will use wax crayons and ink-wash to draw a visual story for their own modern relic. A certificate of completion can be provided on request.

    PRIVATE GALLERY DINNER: THE BANQUET OF CLEOPATRA

    NGV International

    This is truly an unforgettable evening of art, music, and fine dining at the National Gallery of Victoria (NGV) – Australia’s oldest and most visited art gallery.

    We work with operators to ensure this experience is tailored to their guests’ interests from the moment they arrive. The exclusive and private evening commences with a curatorial tour of the Gallery where guests can discover the highlights of the NGV’s acclaimed international collection. There will be moments throughout the journey to pause for live music or a glass of champagne before a degustation dinner, served with accompanying wines. Set within the gallery space, the dinner is directly in front of NGV’s revered masterpiece, Giambattista Tiepolo’s The Banquet of Cleopatra.

    • Prior booking is essential with a 6-week lead time from enquiry encouraged
    • Availability is also subject to artwork movements
    • There is a minimum spend of $39,000 AUD for up to 8 guests and $3,500 AUD per person for additional guests
