For Australian artist Karen Black, concepts such as interior and exterior, personal and universal, historical and contemporary, are fluid and interchangeable.

Hear from the artist as she speaks with NGV curator Sophie Oxenbridge about the process of making her series of works, funded by MECCA as part of the 2025 MECCA Holiday Collaboration and currently on display at The Ian Potter Centre: NGV Australia until 9 March 2026.

In this display, Black brings together new paintings and ceramics that explore the porous boundary between our interior and exterior worlds. Depicting enigmatic figures in dreamlike landscapes that hover between natural and domestic spaces, these works wrestle with the emotional complexity of contemporary life from a feminist perspective.

The NGV warmly thanks MECCA and MECCA M-Power for supporting the acquisition of these works.
