2025 NGV Annual Appeal

This year, the NGV is seeking your support to help us secure Ernst Ludwig Kirchner’s Officer and waitress (Offizier und Kellnerin), 1915 for the Gallery’s Collection.

NGV Members are invited to take a closer look at German expressionist Ernst Ludwig Kirchner and his 1915 painting Officer and waitress (Offizierund Kellnerin), which is the focus the focus of the 2025 NGV Annual Appeal.

Delve into the remarkable story of this masterpiece that was painted during a deeply formative period in Kirchner’s life and career.

The acquisition of Officer and waitress is an extraordinary opportunity to enrich the NGV’s holdings of early twentieth century European modern art, sharing the story of a pivotal artist during the time.

Through a richly illustrated presentation, Dr Ted Gott, Senior Curator of International Art, introduces the painting just for Members and their guests.

Officer and waitress is currently on display at NGV International in the 19th-20th Century Galleries, Level 2.

About the Speaker

Dr Ted Gott is Senior Curator of International Art at the National Gallery of Victoria (NGV). He has curated and co-curated more than 25 exhibitions, including Salvador Dalí: Liquid Desire, Napoleon: Revolution to Empire, and most recently co-curated QUEER: Stories from the NGV Collection and Pierre Bonnard: Designed by India Mahdavi. He has published widely on Australian, British and French art, and in 2013 co-authored a cultural history of the gorilla in nineteenth and twentieth century art, literature, scientific discourse and cinema (Gorilla, Reaktion Press, London).
