Developed especially for NGV Members to accompany the French Impressionism exhibition, acclaimed Manet scholar Alan Krell examines a selection of paintings by the renowned artist that feature Manet’s favourite model, Victorine Meurent.
Interestingly, Édouard Manet (1832–1883) did not participate in any of the eight Impressionist shows from 1874–1886. Yet, like the Impressionists, he did focus on modern, urban life, and his later work shows a penchant for the ‘broken brushstroke’, something that is still seen as typically Impressionist in style.
In this exclusive Members-only talk, Krell will introduce a number of works by Manet including the celebrated Dejeuner sur l’herbe (1863), Olympia (1863) and Street Singer (c. 1862), to explore the artist’s relationship with, and depictions of, Victorine Meurent, who was herself an accomplished artist and regularly exhibited her work at the Paris Salon.
