In an exclusive talk for NGV Members, Carl Villis, Senior Conservator of Paintings, shares the story behind Giambattista Tiepolo’s The Finding of Moses, 1770-1745.

In 1958, the NGV purchased The Finding of Moses as a painting by the Venetian artist Sebastiano Ricci. Following conservation treatment and art historical research, in 2010 the NGV reattributed the painting to the renowned eighteenth-century Venetian painter, Giambattista Tiepolo.

Hear about the intriguing discoveries that the NGV’s research uncovered, making the backstory to this painting one of the most remarkable stories in the NGV Collection.

About the speaker

Carl Villis has more than thirty years of experience in painting conservation in Australia, Italy and the United States. He has worked on many major NGV conservation projects, including paintings by Titian, Tintoretto, Van Dyck, Correggio, Poussin and Tiepolo and has published technical and art historical research on numerous artists represented in the NGV collection. He conducted the research which led to the identification of the NGV’s sixteenth-century portrait of Lucrezia Borgia, and played a key role in the development of MS3 varnish, a museum-grade picture varnish now widely used around the world.

This program is part of a series of Members Talks that uncover the stories behind works from the NGV Collection, developed especially for NGV Members. Book into two or more talks to receive a 10% discount.
