Celebrate the opening of the MECCA x NGV: Women in Design Commission 2025, and hear from recipient, Nipa Doshi, in an exclusive after-hours conversation at NGV International.
Nipa Doshi is an award-winning designer and co-founder of London based studio Doshi Levien with Jonathan Levien. Through her work, Nipa explores and celebrates the beauty, plurality and diversity of the world we live in. She believes design is a powerful tool to disrupt homogeneity and foster equal exchange between cultures and countries.
Nipa Doshi is the fourth recipient of the MECCA x NGV Women in Design Commission, a major ongoing series that invites internationally renowned female designers and architects to create major new and significant work for the NGV Collection:Tatiana Bilbao (2022) , Bethan Laura Wood (2023) and Christien Meindertsma (2024) .
Made possible by MECCA’s social change movement, M-POWER, the initiative celebrates the contributions of women in the arts and design, and champions opportunities for women and girls through the power of art, design, and cultural storytelling.
Speaking live at the NGV with Simone LeAmon, Curator of Contemporary Design and Architecture, Doshi will discuss the ideas and process behind the 2025 Commission A Room of My Own, and reflect on her career to date, including the influences that have shaped her practice — rooted in her upbringing and a deep engagement with Indian visual culture.
Includes an opportunity to view the commission from 5.15–6.15pm.
The MECCA x NGV Women in Design Commission will be on display from 25 September at NGV International.
This program will be held in person and livestreamed. When booking, you can choose to purchase an in-person ticket or a virtual ticket to access the livestream.
About the Speaker
Born in Mumbai and raised in New Delhi, Nipa Doshi studied at the National Institute of Design in Ahmedabad where she developed a love not only for its iconic Modern architecture but also a deep appreciation for the ancient walled cities of India, rich in textiles and other Indian crafts. She went on to do an MA at the Royal College of Art in London where she met her partner Jonathan Levien.
Nipa and Jonathan established their studio Doshi Levien in 2000. The London based practice is internationally acclaimed for work that unites culture, technology, industrial design and fine craftsmanship.
In 2024 she received an MBE from King Charles for her contribution to design. Doshi Levien is recipient of the Elle Decor International Design Award and the British Council’s Designer of the Year Award. Their work has been exhibited at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, the Art Institute of Chicago, and MoMA, NY.
Nipa Doshi’s presentation for the MECCA x NGV Women in Design Commission, which annually, over five years, invites a leading female designer or architect to produce a work for the NGV Collection, is made possible through MECCA’s social change program, MECCA M-POWER.
