Join us to learn more about Paul Signac’s Gasometers at Clichy, in this exclusive talk by NGV Associate Director Michael Varcoe-Cocks.

Acquired for the NGV Collection in 1948, Paul Signac’s Gasometers at Clichy, 1886, is a celebration of paint and colour.

Underpinned by scientific methodology, it is a significant work in the story of the Impressionist movement, as one of the first works painted by Signac according to Neo-Impressionist principles and created at a time when the artist was separating himself from the earlier Impressionists.

Aligned with the scientific theories of colour developed by fellow artist, mentor and friend Georges Seurat, Gasometers at Clichy stands in contrast to other Impressionist paintings that Signac came to see as conservative.

In this exclusive Members-only talk, NGV’s Head of Conservation, Michael Varcoe-Cocks, introduces the story behind this remarkable painting and shares how the NGV’s conservation treatment and subsequent research into the work revealed some interesting facts about the paintings location and its connection to the Eiffel Tower.

Gasometers at Clichy is currently on display in the French Impressionism from the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston exhibition.

This program is part of a series of Members Talks that uncover the stories behind works from the NGV Collection, developed especially for NGV Members. Book into two or more talks to receive a 10% discount.
