Celebrating the opening of CARTIER: Melbourne Winter Masterpieces® 2026, Rotterdam based designer, Sabine Marcelis, shares how her how poetic investigation of materiality, colour and light has inspired her practice, introducing audiences to a range of her projects and highlights from her career.
This will be followed by a conversation moderated by NGV Senior Curator Ewan McEoin discussing her approach to designing CARTIER with her collaborator, Paul Cournet of multidisciplinary design practice CLOUD.
Experience the elegance and exhilaration of CARTIER at NGV this winter. Featuring nearly 400 extraordinary jewels, gems and jewellery objects, the exhibition traces the evolution of Cartier’s enduring legacy in art, design and craftsmanship.
The exhibition has been created by V&A, London, in partnership with NGV and in collaboration with Cartier. Exclusive to Melbourne, CARTIER features loans from significant international collections, alongside highlights from the Cartier Collection.
The exhibition design is a collaboration between NGV, Studio Sabine Marcelis and CLOUD, two multidisciplinary design practices based in Rotterdam, the Netherlands.
Sabine Marcelis is an artist and designer based in Rotterdam, the Netherlands. After graduating from Design Academy Eindhoven she began working across product, installation and spatial design with materiality at the centre of her practice. Light and colour are the driving forces across her work, determining material choices, production processes and the way every object and space is ultimately experienced. Her work has been acquired into the permanent collections of the Museum of Modern Art, New York, Museum Boijmans van Beuningen and the National Gallery of Victoria, among others. She has received the Dezeen Designer of the Year 2024, the Elle Deco International Design Designer of the Year 2023 and Wallpaper Designer of the Year 2020 awards
Paul Cournet is an architect and editor based in Rotterdam, the Netherlands. After working at OMA*AMO for over a decade, Paul founded CLOUD in 2022 as a multidisciplinary practice working in architecture, research and design. Paul is also the co-founder of ALBUM, the new media platform that launched in Milan during Salone del Mobile 2026 in collaboration with Apartamento Magazine. He is also the co-founder of ECHO, a new listening space set to open in Rotterdam in spring 2026.
