The National Gallery of Victoria has an exciting opportunity to acquire an ambitious new work by acclaimed contemporary artist Cai Guo-Qiang. The NGV is seeking your help to ensure this work remains in the NGV Collection for all Victorians to enjoy, now and into the future.
Murmuration (Landscape) is a monumental installation which has been conceived by the artist especially for the NGV’s 2019 Winter Masterpieces parallel exhibitions, Terracotta Warriors: Guardians of Immortality and Cai Guo-Qiang: The Transient Landscape. This spectacular three-dimensional work features 10,000 suspended porcelain birds, each of which has been individually pigmented by Cai’s signature gunpowder explosions. The flock spirals over the heads of visitors to recreate the shape of Mount Li, adjacent to the site of the ancient tomb of China’s first emperor, Qin Shihuang, and near to where his terracotta warriors were discovered.
This is a landmark opportunity to acquire a work of art by one of the world’s most acclaimed living artists. We hope you will join us in this historical moment to make an important contribution that will be enjoyed by generations to come.
We are deeply thankful towards Barry Janes and Paul Cross, Norman and Pauline Bloom, The Fox Family Foundation and Ying Zhang in association with the Asian Australian Foundation for their leadership gifts towards the acquisition of Murmuration (Landscape) 2019.
We warmly welcome donations of any amount and thank you for considering a donation to ensure this work will remain in the NGV Collection for future generations to enjoy. All donations of $2 or over are tax deductible.
