About Cai Guo-Qiang

Regarded as one of the world’s greatest and most significant living artists, Cai Guo-Qiang’s work has been exhibited around the world. Working across a variety of mediums, including drawing, installation, video and performance, he is widely recognised for his innovative work with gunpowder. Cai Guo-Qiang began experimenting with gunpowder in his hometown of Quanzhou in China, and continued his explorations in this medium while living in Japan. It was during this time that he developed his signature outdoor explosion events.

Some of Cai Guo-Qiang’s greatest achievements to date include receiving the Golden Lion at Venice Biennale in 1999, the Hiroshima Art Prize in 2007 and being honoured as a Laureate for the Praemium Imperiale in 2012. He also served as Director of Visual and Special Effects for the Opening and Closing Ceremonies of the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing.

While Cai Guo-Qiang currently lives in New York, this piece has allowed him to reflect on the culture and history of his home country China and this installation promises to be a remarkable experience for visitors.
