Discover NGV’s most famous artworks and unforgettable stories with a Best of NGV Experience. Held at both NGV International and The Ian Potter Centre: NGV Australia, this unique cultural experience reveals the very best of Australia’s oldest and most-visited art gallery. Join a group of like-minded art fans or book your own private experience, personally guided by an NGV expert. Whether you’re already an art aficionado or are looking to learn more, these guided experiences are sure to inform, surprise and inspire.

NGV International Thursdays 2.30–3.30pm, $35pp

This one-hour guided tour of Australia’s oldest and most visited art gallery is a must-do when visiting Melbourne. Personally guided by NGV’s expert storytellers, the Best of NGV Experience will take you on a highlights tour of the most famous artworks and the most unforgettable stories inside the Gallery. Here you will:

  • Delve into the untold stories behind some of the most renowned works in the NGV Collection
  • Discover the techniques, illusions and symbolism used in the work of the Old Masters
  • Learn about the influences behind various art movements and how they came to be
  • See famous works from artists such as Pablo Picasso, Rembrandt van Rijn, Lavinia Fontana, Claude Monet, Salvador Dalí and Yayoi Kusama

 NGV Australia Fridays 12–1pm, $35pp

Experience Australia through art on this one-hour guided tour of The Ian Potter Centre: NGV Australia, Fed Square. Go beyond the frame with one of NGV’s expert storytellers to explore a vast collection of Australian art. Here you will:

  • Learn about First Nations symbolism and hear the stories passed on through the art of the world’s oldest living culture
  • Uncover hidden paintings and little-known stories behind some of the most iconic works of Australian art
  • Discover how art continues to chronicle and shape the Australian national identity
  • See famous works from artists such as Frederick McCubbin, Albert Namatjira, Grace Cossington-Smith, Tom Roberts and Emily Kam Kngwarray

Plan Your Visit

Best of NGV Experiences begin from the Information Desk, where you will meet your guide and collect your headset. Please arrive 10 minutes before the scheduled start time.

Best of NGV Experiences focus on works in the NGV Collection and does not grant access to special exhibitions.

NGV is open daily from 10am–5pm. Entry to the NGV Collection is free, however entry fees may apply to special exhibitions.

Audio Aid

Best of NGV Experiences are conducted with the aid of audio headsets, to ensure you are able to hear your NGV expert clearly throughout the experience.

NGV also offers Hearing Loop devices that allow audio content to be transmitted directly to guest’s hearing aids. If you would like to reserve one of these devices, please let us know when booking your experience.
