Many subjects have been suggested for this fascinating and enigmatic painting, among them ‘The Senses Reveal True Love’, ‘Pan and Syrinx’ or ‘Satyr and Nymph’, and ‘Beauty and Love Taming Wild Passion’. However, the subject appears to be allegorical rather than mythological, with the notion of ‘deceit’ being emphasised by the mask.
