The Department of Contemporary Art encompasses contemporary Australian and International art since the 1980s. It is responsible for the care and development of the National Gallery of Victoria’s collection of contemporary painting, sculpture, installation, moving image and (Australian) decorative arts, and for the development of exhibitions and projects, commissions and collection displays, research and publications, and community engagement. Members of the Contemporary Art department are ambassadors for the work of living artists and the ambitions of contemporary art practice within the NGV and the broader community.
Encompassing contemporary art in all its forms, the NGV’s collection of contemporary art focusses upon Australian since the 1980s, and is the most comprehensive collection nationally. Our collection of international art encompasses a diverse range of global art practice from the 1980s to the present.
