The cocktail dress in black silk taffeta has a fitted bodice, with rounded shoulders and curved three-quarter length sleeves. The wide neckline forms a narrow fold-down collar secured at the centre front with a row of self-covered buttons. The first button has no corresponding buttonhole and is positioned as a decorative feature. The inner bodice is structured like a corset with metal 'boning' and is secured at the centre back with a row of metal hook and loop fasteners. The balloon-shaped skirt is gathered into the waist and falls in two tiers, looping up into the underskirts to form a soft sculpted puff ball edge. The skirt forms a flower shape, supported by four stiffened tulle petticoats.
