There is a moment when the aesthetic idea, successfully executed, begins to feed back into the meaning of what it refers to, to actually alter the meaning or possibilities of understanding for its subject. (Helen Johnson, 2015)

Invited artists will discuss the chapter ‘Stopping Short’ (from Helen Johnson’s new book Painting is a Critical Form) which examines the aesthetic turn in Juan Davila’s After Image series of paintings.  The invited artists, Lisa Radford, Masato Takasaka, Bryan Spier, Annika Koops and Renee Cosgrave, will join Fayen d’Evie and Liang Luscombe from 3-ply to reflect on the chapter’s arguments in light of their respective experiences of painting.
