Cibo Matto at Friday Nights at Jean Paul Gaultier

Tomorrow at Friday Nights at Jean Paul Gaultier, Cibo Matto will take to the stage. Ahead of their performance, we asked them a few questions about art, fashion and music.

Describe your sound in 5 words or less?

Not your usual garden variety.

If your music was an artwork what would it look like?

Tried to put the energy on the album cover.

Who’s your favourite artist/artwork?

Too many!!! Most recent one…Let’s say.

I just saw a documentary film called Jodorowsky’s Dune. That was great!!!

What’s your favourite gig you have played to date?

We just had a great West Coast tour in US. Guitar genius Nels Cline joined on tour, Devin Hoff and Yuval Lion. That was magical to play with all amazing musicians.

What inspires/influences your music the most?

Good things/creations. Bad things/creations.

What song do you wish you wrote?

Australian National Anthem with G sharp.

What part of making music excites you the most?

The moments of playing the songs at the show.

What can a punter expect from your live show?

Deja-Vu.

Tell us about the last song you wrote?

We wrote a song for a super cool kids show called “Design A” of Japanese National TV with Keiko Oyamada of Cornelius. He is a music director. The songs was about teaching fabric patterns to kids. So we rapped like… Stripe, Dots, Paisley etc… That was so fun! They put very sophisticated animation with the song.

What is the most unique/memorable item of clothing you own?

I really love my cap. Especially the world map pattern one. That was given by a Japanese Stylist when we had a magazine shooting. The day before the shooting, it was very windy in Tokyo. I lost my favourite black felt hat when I got out from a cab so that a very strong wind just took it sky high away in a second. I was so shocked. Next day, I had the magazine shooting. When we ended the photo shoot, he said, “This hat is for you.  Happy Birthday.” Yes, that was my birthday!

What was your worst fashion crime?

Oh god, please don’t bring me the bad memory!!!
