Late Modern and Contemporary Art

The first of a series of new presentations of the National Gallery of Victoria’s collection of late-modern and contemporary international art, this selection of works explores various tendencies in artistic practice from the 1960s to the present day. Acknowledging that the recent history of contemporary art continues to be informed by key artists and movements of the recent past, this display encourages dialogue between artists and works from different periods and geo-political realities. Including rooms dedicated to Conceptual Art and Minimalism, Pop Art and its global influence, and a range of singular presentations including Lee Bul’s immersive installation Untitled 2003, and recent acquisitions including Angela Bulloch’s Short, big, yellow drawing machine 2012 and Adel Abidin’s three channel video Three love songs 2010, this display takes an integrated, multi-disciplinary and transcultural approach to the collection, reflecting the increasingly global character of contemporary art as we understand it today.
