17 Jul 79 – 18 Aug 79

The 1978/79 exhibition Some Recent Acquisitions included Renoir’s The Guitar Player (La Joueuse de guitare), which had earlier been unveiled by Queen Elizabeth II and the Duke of Edinburgh at a State Reception held at the NGV during the 1977 Royal Visit. It was also the first work purchased for the Gallery by the newly established Art Foundation of Victoria.

Other significant works acquired that year include the Rembrandt etching St Jerome reading in an Italian landscape, c. 1653, a South Italian column krater from the 4th century BCE attributed to the Amykos Painter, and a group of photographs by early adopters of the medium, including an 1869 portrait of Sir Joseph Herschel by Julia Margaret Cameron.
