About this work
Like many artists who worked in Hollandand Flanders in the seventeenth century, Jan Peeters found a niche market by specialising in a particular genre. Although he painted a handful of interiors and portraits, he is best known for his seascapes and battle scenes. He often depicted stormy seas with large ships battling the elements, but it is his particular manner of portraying clouds that lends much atmosphere to his best works and distinguishes him as an artist. His technique is outstanding, and he maintained the Flemish tradition of working in very fine detail. His frenzied battle scenes, as seen in this work, are richly evocative and crowded with figures.
