About this work

Mimi Parent was a Canadian Surrealist who worked in various media, including drawing, painting and sculpture. She studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Montreal from 1942 until 1947, but was expelled after joining the controversial artists’ group Prisme d’yeux (Prism of Eyes). Parent worked in Paris for many years alongside her husband and fellow artist Jean Benoît, and became a member of the Paris Surrealist Group in 1959. In this watercolour she integrates text into a Surrealist composition with collage and mixed media.
