About this work
Mimi Parent was a Canadian Surrealist who worked in various media including drawing, painting and sculpture. She commenced studying at the École des Beaux Arts in Montreal in 1942 but was expelled in 1947 after joining the controversial artists’ group Prisme d’yeux (Prism of Eyes). Parent worked in Paris for many years alongside her husband and fellow artist Jean Benoît, and she became a member of the Paris Surrealist Group in 1959. In this watercolour she integrates text into a Surrealist composition with collage and mixed media.
