About this work

This royal woman’s ceremonial wonsam or hwarot is produced in a scarlet silk with a white silk lining. The sleeves feature gold circular designs with waves, lotus flowers and a pair of birds symbolising harmony and companionship. The overall covering is finely embroidered with auspicious symbols: plum blossom representing spring and rebirth after a long winter; pomegranates representing fertility; peaches representing happiness, longevity, riches and honour; peony flowers representing wealth and influence; lotus flowers representing purity and birth; and butterflies, symbolising joy, harmony and prosperity. According to cultural belief, these motifs ward off negative energy and bless the wearer with long life, happiness, good health and peace.
